Giuseppe Sardi - Italian Army - 1909
Giuseppe Sardi  the son of  Antonio Sardi
was born on August 4, 1885  in  Italy.  He
served in the
3rd Bersaglieri Infantry in
the Italian Army in 1909.   He  later lived
upstate in Poughkeepsie,  New York  for a
short time and owned his own restaurant
but unfortunately it burnt down.  He
never lost his dream  for one day and
soon moved to  Manhattan so he could
make enough money to send back home
to his family.    He was married to
Edvige Specos  and they had seven
children.  In 1947, his son
Dino Sardi
went into business with his friend
Antonio Cianciotta as a partner and
owner in a italian restaurant named
Sardi & Cianciotta.  In 1950, it began as
Sardi Restaurant at 360 West 42nd
Street,  but was changed to the fathers
name of
Giuseppe Sardi Restaurant
because Vincent Sardi had the name
Sardi's already.  From 1947 to 1969 the
family had one of the best restaurants in
Manhattan and maybe in America.
Giuseppe died August 28, 1971 in his 86th
year in Rio nell'Elba, Italy.
The 3rd Bersaglieri Infantry are part of the
corps of the Italian Army created by
General Alessandro La Marmora in 1836 to
serve in the Piedmontese Army, later to
become the Royal Italian army. The name
"Bersaglieri" means "sharpshooters". They
have always been a high-mobility infantry
unit, and can still be recognized by the
distinctive wide brimmed hat that they
wear, decorated with capercaillie feathers.
